Georgetown, Soccer Club, 2009
In areas like Litchfield and Pawleys Island, soccer is an established sport.Bolstered by strong feeder programs, the boys and girls teams at Waccamaw High have become state powers. But in other parts of Georgetown County, soccer is continuing to emerge.Created to raise the game's profile in areas like Georgetown and Andrews, the Georgetown County soccer club's goal is to expose local players to a higher level of competition and increase individual as well as team skills.Part of the club's efforts are being seen this week as it is hosting a training camp offered by Midwest Soccer Academy, one of the most respected and experienced training organizations in the United States.Running through Friday, the camp's emphasis is on the "Dutch Touch" an attacking brand of soccer popularized in Holland. From instructors like Jonty Loukes - a former English professional player - participants are getting the chance to learn from an experienced and talented staff, who are dedicated to helping attendees raise their level of play."There are some very good players in our camp this week," Loukes said."You can tell they have a passion for the game and a willingness to learn."Said Shane Maglich, director of the Georgetown Soccer Club, "It's great for us to have (an organization) like MSA here. The kids have a chance to learn from the best. They have the opportunity to see an entirely different style of play."While the club draws players from the Waccamaw area, Maglich has been pleased to see an increase in the numbers from Georgetown and Andrews. When it started three years ago, the team had trouble finding enough players to field one team, but this year there will be three different squads - boys U18, boys U15, and a girls team."We're seeing an increase not only in the number of players, but also the quality," Maglich said. "Travel teams help build a sport's base within a community. If you look at successful high school teams, most all will have that strong foundation that comes (in part) from having successful (recreation and travel) leagues."In the future, Maglich would like to see the club form a closer relationship with the local rec leagues."A lot of communities are already doing this," Maglich said."It's a way for us to expand our pool of players. We want to continue to develop the players we have and find others who want to participate."

"I just wanted to send you an email to tell you that the camp was great this week. Jonathon did a great job; especially since he had various age group of kids. All the kids loved him and drastically improved their skills. He kept the camp fun yet maintained a level of discipline that kept the camp manageable and organized. On a personal note, my family has thoroughly enjoyed having Jonathon stay with us this week and hate that he has to leave. He is a very easy person to please and adjusts well. Thank you for sending him to us and for everything MSA does in their recruitment of coaches. I’ve even marked down Spennymoor and Sunderland as places I need to visit. Cheers!"

"I just wanted to let you know what a great time we had at Dutch soccer camp this week @ Port Charlotte, FL. Coach Erwin, Coach Tom and Coach Dave did such a great job with the kids. They really learned a lot from them. We all hated to see it end. Erwin was our house guest for the week and I wanted to also let you know it was a joy having him stay with us. This was my first time hosting a coach and we had such a great time and learned so much from him. We really liked having him stay with us. We would love it if the three of them could come back again next summer to do another camp. Thanks to you and to all of them for a wonderful time.
